Taphouse wins 'Internet' award

The Taphouse Cabal has received the coveted "Spartacus of the Internet" from Rev. Magdalen, for it's recent T-shirt fundraiser. Reached for comment at the Hidden Hills Spa and Sanitorium, the Rev. Ankara said, "I always knew we were this cool." Luncheon will follow the awards ceremony, which will be held at an undisclosed location.

Taphouse Radio

Okay!

Last friday (the 21st) i decided on the spur of the moment to try and test out a server for a radio show. Unfortunately, it worked. Worse than that, though, it caught on! All of a sudden everyone wanted to connect to the server i'd set up, and broadcast their own show.

So, with that having sgone smoothly, i'm pleased to announce that:

TAPHOUSE RADIO IS ON THE AIR

With special guest DJ's from across the country, and beyond! Here's a preliminary schedule of what today's going to look like: (it's 2 now so we'll start here with 2pm)

ALL TIMES ARE EDT (GMT -5, i think)

2:00 - 3:00 Ankara's Mix
3:00 - 5:00 Vertigo's Post-Rock Funtime Jams
5:00 - 7:00 Twobeans' Repetitive Jewish NiggerMusic Show

Boing Boing!

Looks like we got some help from the kind folks at boing-boing to get some money raised to help magdalen. So far we've added another 30 orders to our previous... 4.

Bringing our total orders up to 34!

if you do some quick math, you see that we've almsot paid for an entire hour of lawyering! Man, lawyers are expensive. But for those of you who don't donate (and donate well), i think the Rev Nickie Deathchick said it best.

"You're NEXT!"

Something to think about. That's why we're doing all of this, so that things like this won't happen again. so that no one else will have to lose custody of their child for having beliefs that other people don't share, or for participating in something so "out there" that they just don't get it. It's a performance, it's art, it's funny.

I just got back from XDay, and i laughed my ass off most of the time i was there.

So go get a shirt!

Because it's FUNNY.

Final Score: Saucers, 0; SubGenius, Slack

Well, no saucers again, but the Taphouse Cabal returns from another slackful celebration, ready to wait out another year. Fun was had, substances were shared, and sleep was occasionally present. To those of us to those of you, thanks for not beating on the oil drum - Joy really appreciated that. To all the others, thanks for coming by and introducing yourselves. We'll try to keep the party going here on the servers for as long as we can pay attention. Oh, and the "Why a Goat?" shirts look pretty darned good. Go get one!

Tuesday, June 20

Shits!

Shirts, even!

Go buy them and help support Magdalen! Battling the CON is cheap, if you're being subversive, but VERY VERY EXPENSIVE if you're doing it in court, with *real* lawyers.

GO GO GO ---> HERE!

No news is good news...

I just noticed that there haven't been any news posts lately. But then i thought about it, and realised that there really hasn't been all that much news.

A quick recap of things that weren't newsworthy:

  • frop.taphouse.org got a RAM upgrade
  • fester.taphouse.org finally upgraded it's... whatever it was that got upgraded
  • #doctorwho got created, and is actually quite the busy channel on saturdays when Dr Who airs on the BBC.

That's all i can think of at the moment, but keep checking back soon. Our next bit of news will probably be that someone has finally surpassed my highscore at trivia. But that'll most likely be a while down the road.

Hotep's Upgrading

hotep.taphouse.org is upgrading its connection the weekend of April 1st. Anyone using an ip address to connect will want to switch to the domain name, or start using the round robin at irc.taphouse.org, since the old ip address will become invalid. Downtime should be minimal.*

Update on Magdalen's situation

In case anyone was wondering, Magdalen's blog hasn't been
updated because she has been forbidden to speak about
her son on the internet by the judge, while supposedly this is
to protect the child, I get a whiff of a coverup
of a very poorly rendered decision by a backwater judge,
but hey, make up your own mind. This is the reason
the transcripts havent been posted.

the following reprinted from 'High Weirdness'
http://www.modemac.com

The judge had ordered Magdalen to cease all communication
on the Internet regarding her son. This was not a written
statement - the judge had verbally ordered her to remain
offline, and no written order was available. Magdalen stated
that even though the order was verbal, the court considered
it to be an official order from the judge, and so she has had
to remain offline since then.

However, as of March 15th, Magdalen had obtained legal
representation from none other than the law firm of
Lipsitz Green Fahringer Roll Salisbury & Cambria, LLP.
(This firm includes Larry Flynt and Marilyn Manson among
their clients.) Magdalen's legal team is challenging this order.
When the order is overturned and she is online again, she
will have quite a story to tell.

IMPORTANT: Because Magdalen has a new legal team,
donations to her legal fund are to be sent to a new address.
Paypal donations can still be sent to

INTRO

Child custody cases are so common and vicious these days that almost everyone knows someone who has been affected by them. These cases are not tried by juries. We trust juries to decide whether someone lives or dies, whether someone is sentenced to life or parole, but when it comes to the most helpless members of our society, our children, our justice system relies on decisions made by individual judges.

HISTORY OF THE CASE

This case began in 1997 when Rachel Knight and her son, Kohl Jary moved to Texas to be with her fiancĂ©, Steve Bevilacqua. Jeff Jary, Kohl’s birth father, remained in rural Upstate New York, living off the dole in the same bedroom he grew up in at his father’s house. Judge James P. Punch entered into the records a custody agreement Rachel and Jeff worked out between themselves. After a series of very emotionally-charged court battles, Kohl’s custody seemed finally settled in May, 2000.

2005/2006

December 18, 2005, Rachel put Kohl on a flight to Rochester, New York to be picked up by Jeff for his Christmas visitation. This year Jeff was finally required to share half the transportation expenses. The visitation plan was for Kohl to be returned by Jeff to Rachel’s mother on January 2, 2006, so Kohl could spend time with his mother’s relatives before returning to Georgia on January 7, 2006.

Rachel would not see Kohl again until January 20, 2006, when she was allowed one brief overnight visit with Kohl at her mother’s house. Kohl was visibly changed, appearing closed and withdrawn and becoming emotional when the subject of his living arrangements was approached, even very gently, from any direction. He seemed afraid to talk about what was going on in his father’s house, or whether or not he wanted to live there.

On December 22, 2005, without informing Rachel, Jeff went to the Orleans County Courthouse and presented Judge Punch with a series of allegations about not being able to contact Rachel and needing an order of Temporary Sole Custody in order to prevent Kohl from being kidnapped. Judge Punch issued Jeff a Temporary Sole Custody order and allowed him to keep Kohl after his scheduled Christmas visitation. This was done without making any attempt to contact Rachel and discover whether Jeff’s allegations were true. Rachel did not even receive any paperwork from the court until January 9, 2006 — 17 days after Judge Punch entered the order of Temporary Sole Custody for Jeff.

On February 3, 2006, Judge Punch heard testimony in the case. Jeff entered into evidence 16 exhibits taken from the Internet, 12 of which are photographs of the SubGenius event, X-Day. Kohl has never attended X-Day and is not in any of the pictures. Rachel is depicted in many of these photos, often wearing skimpy costumes or completely nude, while participating in X-Day and Detroit Devival events.

The judge, allegedly a very strict Catholic, became outraged at the photos of the X-Day parody of Mel Gibson’s movie The Passion of the Christ — especially the photo where Jesus [Steve Bevilacqua] is wearing clown makeup and carrying a crucifix with a pool-noodle dollar sign on it while being beaten by a crowd of SubGenii, including a topless woman with a “dildo”.

His Honor also strongly disapproved of the photos of Mary Magdalen [Rachel Bevilacqua] in a bondage dress and papier machĂ© goat’s head. The judge repeatedly asked, “Why a goat? What’s so significant about a goat’s head?” When Rachel replied, “I just thought the word ‘goat’ was funny,” Judge Punch lost his temper completely, and began to shout abuse at Rachel, calling her a “pervert,” “mentally ill,” “lying,” and a participant in “sex orgies.” The judge ordered that Rachel is to have absolutely no contact with her son, not even in writing, because he felt the pictures of X-Day performance art were evidence enough to suspect “severe mental illness”. Rachel has had no contact with Kohl since that day, February 3, 2006.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

The ACLU and other watchdog groups have been contacted, but the wheels of justice turn slowly, especially in matters of judicial oversight. It is likely that the Bevilacqua family will need to raise approximately $50,000 to pursue their case through to an appeals court that will hopefully restore their son to them. Please help by donating whatever you can, or at least spreading the word to others who may be able to help. Any media exposure is welcome as well. Please PayPal all donations to Magdalen@subgenius.com, or send a check directly to:

This case has the potential to set a precedent that could affect all moms who have ever attended X-day. If any county court judge can deem attending X-day sufficient reason to take away a child, and get away with it, no one’s children are safe. Please help the ‘Moms for “Bob”’ legal fund with a donation if you can, because the last thing anyone wants is for women to be afraid to come to X-Day or to express themselves artistically however they choose.

nifty huh? I thought so.

New server news, anyone?

It would seem that there are two computers joining the family in the coming month and a bit. This means that our grand total will be three, leaving one for work (laptop) and two at home(newish one and old one). Are we all following along in our textbooks?

So, i'll have the free serverboxen and cable internet that i've been whining about getting for the past year or so. So, what should i do with my little network when i get it set up? How should i set it up? Any suggestions from you techie taphouse folk? Do we need another taphouse server for anything, or should i just serve files off it or something?

I'm asking a little early because there's still time to reconsider what kind of hardware i'll be getting. Any suggestions on use will obviously effect the hardware. Or something.

Again, suggestions?

Bucky Lives!

I'm not dead! Well, not quite dead. As most of you may know, i had some kidney trouble earlier this month and as a result had to spend a few weeks in the hospital. I am, however, recovering nicely. Soon i will be back online and acting once more as a lightning rod for slacklessness.

See you soon!

the ALPHA is with us!

but I can't really speak about it now, as it is in super seekrit beta testing.
Forget I mentioned this. on another note, Vertigo has decided not to be a smelly hippy anymore and get a real job, and move to wisconsin. Also bucky, if you ever read this, do you suppose more than one of us should be able to change settings here?

Page updates complete, I think...

All of the suggestions for the page *improvements* have been implimented. the new SSL page is here.
Everyone please give it a lookover and let me know if there is anything I forgot

Now the official network of the Subgenius Foundation

My question here is, why haven't we put this on the page in a prominent place?
"now with more subgenius!!!"

IMPORTANT: Network Update

As of 10:30pm EST, all of the taphouse IRC servers were updated to ensure Y2K compliance. This is in accordance with taphouse operating procedure chapter 2, paragraph 3, subparagraph viii which explicitly states:
"...we'll get around to it eventually."
That is all.

IRC.TAPHOUSE.ORG

Recently a suggestion was made that we don't have in a very conspicuous place, a link for the servers (I know we have an entire page dedicated to each server and it's owner) also the round robin link is on the main page, but it is down in the text, there is no link that can be seen quickly
On the old page we had a quicklink (that mirc can use) also shouldn't the java thing say "chat now" or something? I know...It SEEMS SO OBVIOUS, however... Anyway people what do you think?

My opinion? The servers are listed on the "meet your operators" page so that is well and good
I would prefer that people use the round robin, as we bother to keep it current AND it balances the load. As I see it the only change is maybe put a nice big round robin link somewhere conspicuous.
